20 Attention-Getting Signals to Quiet a Noisy Classroom
Every teacher needs a fast, reliable way to bring a busy room back to attention — and repeating "quiet please" over the noise is not it. A good attention signal is short, taught in advance, and used the same way every time. Here are twenty to choose from, grouped by type, plus the secret to making any of them actually work.
Call-and-response signals
You say the first part; the class learns to stop and answer with the second. These are energetic and work brilliantly with younger students.
- "Class, class!" → "Yes, yes!" The classic. Vary your tone ("Classity-class!") and students must echo it exactly.
- "One, two, three, eyes on me!" → "One, two, eyes on you!" Simple, rhythmic, hard to ignore.
- "Hocus pocus!" → "Everybody focus!" Playful and memorable.
- "Macaroni and cheese!" → "Everybody freeze!" A favourite in primary classrooms.
- "To infinity!" → "And beyond!" Borrow from whatever the class loves.
- "All set?" → "You bet!" Quick and upbeat for transitions.
Quiet and non-verbal signals
For older students, or when you want calm rather than energy, silent signals lower the temperature instead of raising it.
- Raised hand. You raise your hand; students raise theirs and fall silent as they notice. It spreads across the room without a word.
- The silent countdown. Hold up five fingers and lower them one at a time; the class should be ready by zero.
- Lights flick. A quick off-and-on of the lights is a long-understood "eyes up" cue.
- A chime, bell or rainstick. A single pleasant sound is gentler than your voice and easy on you across a long day.
- The pause and wait. Stop talking, stand still, and wait. Silence from the front is surprisingly contagious once students know you mean it.
- Write it on the board. Silently writing the next instruction draws eyes forward without competing with the noise.
Rhythm and music signals
- Clap a pattern. Clap a short rhythm; students clap it back. Change the pattern to keep them listening.
- Call a tune. Hum or sing the first line of a class song and let them finish it.
- A short playlist clip. The same ten-second sound or jingle becomes a Pavlovian "wrap it up" cue.
Timer and countdown signals
Sometimes the most powerful signal is simply a deadline everyone can see. A visible countdown removes the negotiation: when the time is up, the activity is over.
- "You have 30 seconds." Put a classroom timer on the board so the whole room watches the same clock instead of asking how long is left.
- The transition countdown. "Back to your seats before the timer hits zero" turns tidying up into a shared challenge.
- The gentle alarm. A soft chime at zero ends an activity cleanly, so you don't have to talk over the room to stop it.
Whole-class focus games
- "If you can hear me, touch your nose." Whisper a series of actions; students who are listening join in and the rest quickly follow.
- "Give me five." Five expectations on five fingers — eyes watching, ears listening, mouth quiet, hands still, body calm — counted down together.
The real secret: teach it, then be consistent
No signal works because it is clever; it works because it has been taught and is used the same way every single time. Three rules make any signal stick:
- Teach it explicitly. Explain the signal, practise it a few times when the class is calm, and tell students exactly what "ready" looks like — silent, still, eyes on you.
- Wait for 100%. If you accept 80% silence, 80% becomes the standard. Hold the signal until everyone is with you, then thank them.
- Keep it fresh but consistent. Rotate a couple of signals so they don't go stale, but never change what "ready" means.
